There’s something magical about stitched memories—the way fabric, thread, and imagination can bring stories to life. That spirit lives at the heart of my book, Love You to Pieces: A Gift of Friendship, where handmade characters and vintage textiles come together to tell stories of care, creativity, and connection.
This book has been years in the making—a patchwork of inspiration pulled from vintage dolls, heartfelt connections, and the joy of creating handmade gifts. Inside, you’ll find charming characters paired with vintage patchwork that speaks to the nostalgia and beauty of handcrafting with love. Sunshine Polly was one of the very first characters to take shape, and she carries a long tradition with her.
Meet Sunshine Polly!
Polly is a bright and cheerful “baseball-head” cloth doll, made using a classic construction technique that dates back generations. Her round head is formed from curved fabric panels stitched together by hand—a time-honored method used in many early handmade dolls.
During the Great Depression—and long after—dolls like Polly were lovingly created from whatever materials were available: worn shirts, flour sacks, spare buttons, bits of yarn. These weren’t just toys. They were comfort, companionship, and proof that beauty could still be made, even in hard times.
Polly carries that legacy forward with her hand-stitched eyes, sweet embroidered smile, and button-jointed limbs that give her a classic, posable form. She embodies the heart of handmade—simple, resourceful, and filled with warmth.
One of the things I love most about Sunshine Polly is that she’s not only a character in the book—she’s a doll you can make yourself. Her full sewing pattern is included in the book’s online bonus content, accessible through a QR code inside, alongside patterns for Yo-Yo the Clown and Sock Monkey.
Sunshine Polly represents the joy, resilience, and quiet optimism that handmade pieces can hold. She’s a reminder that even the simplest stitches can carry sunshine with them.
Thank you for spending time getting to know Sunshine Polly. I can’t wait to introduce you to more of the Love You to Pieces cloth doll crew.
XO,
Amy
