Not long ago, I heard a woman say, It seems strange that while so many women can make good cake, so few of them can make good pie. And as I thought it over I realized that there was so much truth in what she said.
This is unfortunate indeed, for if a dessert contest were held, there’s no doubt that pie would lead all the other varieties in popularity. So let’s look into the matter of pie making in order that we may learn for all time the secrets they,re only a few in number that will enable all of us to supply our home folks with pies which they will enjoy and of which we may be proud.

A good homemade cherry pie has always been a Summer tradition in my family. I remember as a child watching my grandparents pit cherries at our kitchen table during their visits to Des Moines. We had one small tree that most years provided us cherries for several of my mother’s pies. This Summer, I actually picked and pitted cherries from Nagy’s Farm in Kewadin, Michigan. Sad to say I did not attempt the pie, but instead made a strudel dish which my family enjoyed and I was proud of. So much of Mary Brooks Pickens’ joy was based on bringing joy to your family and friends thru the domestic arts–and the satisfaction you will enjoy as a reward for your efforts. Whether handmade craft or homemade pie, nothing is more rewarding than creating for the “home folk” in your life!
