Savor Simplicity: the Art of Summer Entertaining

In that sublime season after the kids are out of school and before the full heat of summer descends, life seems to move in one direction outdoors. More than just a change of environment, this is a time to savor the pleasures of life: relationships with family and friends, the beauty of the natural world, juicy summer strawberries…

As Ann Pierce wrote in the June 1927 issue of Needlecraft Magazine, summer entertaining need not be elaborate, but rather comprised of a simple hospitality, focused on the joy of living. Leisure and dining outside should be less formal, and should create an inviting atmosphere to guests, accentuated by a harmony with the season.

And, a summer party without flowers is unthinkable. Too true, Ann! Whether it’s a store-bought bouquet or a fresh picked bundle, flowers are an easy way to make a big difference in your summer setting.

In my book, Vintage Notions, I feature an article by Margaret Murrin from the June/July 1925 issue of Inspiration that discusses some tips and guidelines for decorating outdoor and porch settings. Because color is so much a part of summer, it may be used more freely on porches and decks than would be possible indoors. Her advice is accompanied by a helpful color scheme chart for coordinating cushions, furniture, upholstery, and rugs. And though they were conceived in the past, there is still a wealth of inspiration to be found in the colors and tips.

You can, of course, find other ready-to-use color palettes and images on the Vintage Workshop for your own decorating endeavors.

While there are so many possibilities for great summertime projects, don’t let extravagant preparations distract you from the real joy of summer entertaining: spending time with friends and family.

As they say, “There is majesty in simplicity.”
