Small-time Celebrations

One of my favorite ways to celebrate the Fourth is by doing it small.

Here in Kansas City, our friends celebrate every year with the Cherry Bomb neighborhood parade in their cul-de-sac. The ritual of planning our red, white, and blue attire and decorating the kids bikes made for a creative day with great photo ops and memories! Not to mention some fireworks that the dads seemed more interested in than the kids…we’ll call them Pyro Pops!!

Another one of my favorite small-scale summer celebrations happens in Alden, Michigan a small town “Up North”. The Alden Days parade is in late July. We have waved our flags for local firetrucks and the talented kazoo band. Plus, my parents own a Model A which makes for a fun ride with the cousins. This town has such a quaint and charming personality that welcomes locals as well as “Fudgies” a term for the summer visitors like me, who flock up for the delicious homemade famous to the area!

Patriotic fun was the name of the game this weekend! I hope that you will find time this month for small-scale celebrating with family and friends. Look for me later this month on the Fudgie Float in the Alden Days parade.
